Successful Pillage
The forecast was accurate for the final of the Pillages and with relief Kevin Ca
mpbell and the Pillagers set of 12 hours earlier than planned. The Valkyrie Craft Skerries Yawl sponsored by Iain Smith set off from Bowmore on time and headed for Bruichladdich. Within minutes two of the oars snapped, fortunately on this short leg of the voyage this caused little problem and new oars were picked up at Bruichladdich.
Three teams of four rowers and a helmsman were escorted and supported by James Brown in the ‘Maggie B’, and His son Jim Brown in the ‘Highlander’, Ellen provided catering at each port for the famished crews. Meanwhile the land based team were rumbling a barrel from Ardbeg the Cighouse - an impressive 54 miles, the teams arriving in Craighouse within minutes of each other.
At Craighouse the whiskey was decanted into a barrel to marry for the next 6 months. The proceeds of the auction
will be distributed to local charities on the basis of a nomination from each of the distilleries.
